What Is Agentforce?

Salesforce introduced Agentforce in September 2024 as a platform for building AI agents that can complete business tasks inside Salesforce. Instead of generating a response and waiting for the next prompt, an agent can retrieve data, decide which action fits the request, and carry it through using the permissions and workflows you've configured.

Atlas (the platform's reasoning engine) coordinates this process. As you know, Einstein is Salesforce's AI platform. Step 2. Enable Agentforce and Connect Data Cloud

Enable Agentforce in Salesforce Setup, then connect the data your agent will use. Step 3. Configure Subagents and Actions in Agentforce Builder

Build the agent around subagents. Each one should have a clear scope, a classification description, and instructions explaining how it should handle a specific task. Next, configure the actions each subagent can perform. Those actions can retrieve or update records through Apex, Salesforce Flows, or external APIs.

Also, pay close attention to the classification description. Agentforce uses it to decide which subagent should handle an incoming request, so vague descriptions can send requests down the wrong path.

Step 4. Configure Guardrails Through the Einstein Trust Layer

Next, configure the guardrails that protect customer data and AI interactions. Agentforce relies on the Einstein Trust Layer to check prompts for injection attempts, screen responses for unsafe content, and verify that answers are based on the available data. One thing worth knowing: Salesforce no longer uses data masking with Agentforce because masked records don't contain enough information for AI agents to complete lookups. Use the Preview tab in Agentforce Builder to test the agent with requests that reflect real customer interactions. Don't stop at the final response; review the interaction details to see which subagents, actions, instructions, and reasoning steps produced it.

A correct answer doesn't always mean the agent made the right decisions. If a request reaches the wrong subagent but still produces the expected result, the same workflow may fail the next time a customer asks the question differently.

Step 6. Deploy to Your First Channel

Agentforce supports web and in-app chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Apple Messages, LINE, email-to-case, and voice. However, that doesn't mean you should deploy all of them on day one.

Web chat is usually the best place to start because if the agent can't resolve a request, customers can quickly reach a support specialist, making it easier to spot issues and adjust the workflow. Voice is much less forgiving: each action consumes 30 Flex Credits instead of 20, so mistakes cost more while you're still refining the implementation.

Step 7. Train Your Team and Manage the Change

As Agentforce takes over routine requests, your support specialists will spend more time on cases that need investigation or judgment, so make sure they're ready for that change.

For instance, show the team where to find an agent's interaction history, so they can quickly understand what happened before a case was escalated. It’s also important to decide in advance when an agent should be removed from a workflow and who can make that call.

Step 8. Monitor KPIs and Expand

Compare production results with the baseline you established in Step 1. Look at the deflection rate, escalation rate, and handling time for the requests Agentforce manages to see if the new workflow is performing the way you expected.

Keep an eye on Flex Credit consumption, too. A poorly configured subagent can trigger several unnecessary actions during a single request, increasing costs without improving the outcome. If the numbers still look good after a full billing cycle, move on to the next workflow.

While licensing is the most visible expense, migration, implementation services, and ongoing platform usage can have just as much impact on the total Agentforce implementation cost.

Salesforce offers two pricing models for Agentforce: conversation-based pricing and Flex Credits. You choose one model for the entire Salesforce organization.
